This is a useful signal source, but it is held back by the very basic firmware. There are different modes which the MAX2870 can be set to which favour noise over spurs or to lock the PLL faster, etc. None of these advanced functions are supported by the firmware and it would be really useful if the manufacturer would open the source code so that the user can enhance it. The currently provided API for controlling this from a computer is badly thought out and does not provide the level of control that the MAX2870 can provide.
