steve You can power LEDs with AC but there it's easy to kill them that way. There is a maximum reverse voltage:current that the can withstand. Most ones I've spec'd are around 5 of 6 volts. Also don't forget that AC is usually given as an RMS value so the peak voltage is 1.414 times that. I recommend another diode across it connected in reverse to shunt the backward voltage. The BEST thing is to just connect another LED in reverse across it. That way you do get light emitted on both half cycles.

steve Just power it with 3.3 volts and the output will be compatible with the 8266. Digital inputs typically require > 2 volts for high and under 0.4 volts for low.
