Tom E@Roman Potapov Itcomes with an extra long spring and they made it easy to swap springs, so 266650's, 21700's, and even 18650's can be used.

For this price, this is an excellent deal for a practical work light. I've only used an 18650 with it, though comes with a 3 AAA carrier. The driver is a classic resistance based design, with 3 separate banks of resistors to limit the amps per channel. I measured the following on a 35E near max capacity: 1.0A on main LED, 0.5A on the white COB, 0.2A on the RED COB. For Lumens, I measured: 300/119/12 in the same order, though the 12 for RED is probably way off from the meter I'm using. The COB produces a smooth flood that is very wide, I mean very close to 180 degrees, almost the same as a bare LED. It can easily be torn down. The reflector is plastic and sits in the hole of the COB, and there was no thermal grease whatsoever under the main LED MCPCB and the COB. The COB has an aluminum plate for backing, probably there for heat sinking. The design is not a good one for thermal management, with a separate insert piece, and behind it is plastic piece where the wires run through. The pics show the pieces of the head assembly. I replaced the stock XML "style" LED with a real CREE T6 4C on an aluminum MCPCB, sanded down to just under 1.2 mm (stock is 0.83 mm thick). I left the wires and resistors stock for now, and bypassed both springs with 24 AWG wires. Results in lumens: 375/142/14 on a GA cell at 4.18V. Output drops as the cell drains - typical of resistor based drivers. I'll probably try resistor modding, but moderately - it's a poor design thermally. Anodizing is low end, expected for this price, the aluminum piece for LED/COB mounting is like pot metal - very poor finish. I sanded the flat surfaces of the LED mount areas and used a good quality thermal grease, so it should help some. I wouldn't push more than 1.5 amps through this light, and 1.5A may beyond it's limit for any decent amount of continuous runtime. Still, it's all accessible, no glue, but re-wiring after disassembly is a bit tricky even for semi-pros. A driver replacement is certainly possible, but you need 3 separate 7135 based channels, and of course custom firmware. There's 7 wires: main LED +/grnd, CON White, RED, grnd, and switch +/grnd.

Tom E Sorry, didn't see these comments. I swapped the driver to a FET 1 runing NarsilM, and swapped the LED's to XPL HI V2 5D's - now it's a great light! Draws 9.3 amps max at the tail, does about 2400 lumens at turn on, 2150 at 30 secs and 16 kcd (250 meters) in throw, plus has a great beam, great tint as the HI 5D's do. I just rcv'd a 2nd AX3 and the button doesn't feel as good as the first, but the LED's don't get stuck on very low. I'll see what goin on with the switch - might be alignment, something simple. I have spares that may fit.

Q: How many modes of operation does it have and does it have a strobe mode?

Tom E As the author of the firmware, the primary default mode is smooth ramping with 150 unique steps that ramp in about 2.4 seconds. In addition though, there are 12 groups of pre-defined mode sets, if that's what you prefer, but most people prefer the ramping once they've used it. There are strobe modes though - if you are at max/turbo, a double-click will display an intense strobe. So from OFF, you can dbl-click, then dbl-click again to get to strobe.

Tom E Mine is now doing 25.2K @start, 21K at 30 seconds. I added bypass wires on all 5 springs though, removed those blocking tabs around the batt+ contacts, few other minor tweaks but left the stock driver and FET. I used the VapCell 2800's which are VTC5D rewraps - bout the best cell for this light. Stock the light hit 20K lumens at start. Something is wrong there - what cells are you using? You must use high quality, high power cells.

Tom E Weird - I don't see what you are talking about. Many AR coatings can be noticed by reflection of a purple color, this is how I can verify AR coatings. So, not sure exactly where you see the problem. Inside the glass doesn't matter - only thing that matters is the beam.

Tom E Try a factory reset - it might have gotten disabled -- I've seen/heard it happen several times before.
