  • Michael There are two possible issues which are interrelated. In discharge mode there is a limit on the power that the unit can dissipate internally. The unit will automatically limit the current so that the internal temperature does not rise above a preset temperature consistent with this power and with the fan running.
    In Internal discharge the higher the battery voltage the lower the current that it can be discharged to keep the power being dissipated down to 20W.
    When using external discharge the maximum current that the the battery can be discharged at is determined by the external resistance (load) that is used. The lower the resistance the more current that can be drawn from the battery. Obviously the load has to be able to cope with the power that it has to absorb. HOWEVER, if the current set is lower than the resistance is capable to giving then the voltage drop across it will be less than the battery voltage and this power will be dissipated in the charger. If it is more than 20W then the charger will reduce the current again. When starting external discharge the unit gradually increases the current and at higher voltages and currents, during this transition period the power within the charger may increase above 20W in which case it is limited, stops increasing and then drops right back. The way round this is to start the discharge with a load than gives a lower maximum current as once the charger has got the current up to the maximum the external load will allow, the voltage across the charger is low and will react to allow immediate higher currents if the load resistance is reduced.

    As long as you do this it all works very well.
